Riyadh: On October 15, AmCham Saudi Arabia hosted a closed-door roundtable to discuss the progress and challenges of advancing women’s workforce participation. The event brought together representatives from 15 leading companies, along with policymakers and academic experts, to examine how businesses are adapting to changes in the labor landscape and driving greater inclusion.

Moderated by AmCham Saudi Arabia’s Ex-Officio Chairman, Tarik Solomon, the discussion was inspired by 2017 research by Dr. Jennifer Peck and Professor Claudia Eger from Harvard’s Kennedy School, which identified barriers to female employment in Saudi Arabia.

    Key takeaways included:
  • Cultural values significantly impact female workforce integration, especially in family-owned businesses.
  • STEM education reforms are facilitating women’s entry into male-dominated fields.
  • Economic incentives are boosting female participation, though challenges such as retention and wage gaps persist.
  • Sustained progress requires top-down cultural change that prioritizes inclusion.

  • While progress since 2017 has opened doors for women, the focus now is on elevating participation to leadership roles. We thank all attendees for their valuable insights and commitment to empowering women in the workplace.
